About INQUIRE

The Institute for Quantum Information Research and Engineering (INQUIRE) was established to transcend the boundaries of traditional disciplines and converge research, education, and outreach activities in quantum sciences, engineering, and technology at Northwestern University. INQUIRE began as an Initiative in April 2019 and as of September 2024 it is an Institute.

INQUIRE combines the talents of over 50 faculty in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and the McCormick School of Engineering, as well as several University Research Institutes and Centers by fostering a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative environment focused on advancing quantum information sciences and engineering in numerous areas of research excellence. By combining strengths, INQUIRE aims to develop the fundamental scientific and engineering knowledge that are critical to implement novel technologies for quantum computing, communications, networking, and sensing applications.

INQUIRE is the hub for quantum-related activities at Northwestern, providing information for upcoming events and opportunities, increasing awareness and impact of Northwestern efforts in quantum research, and helping catalyze connections within and outside of the University. INQUIRE promotes and facilitates partnerships with academic, government, and industrial organizations to accelerate research efforts and promote translation of new discoveries.

Northwestern University is focused on the development of talented undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral trainees to build a highly skilled, trans-disciplinary quantum workforce. INQUIRE is dedicated to fostering these efforts across schools and departments through co-mentoring students and developing new trans-disciplinary courses and degree programs.
